The Sermon on the Mount had been called Jesus’ inaugural address. In these chapters of Matthew, we see the lessons Jesus had for His first church. Our goal in this lesson series is to learn these lesson for ourselves, as we seek to mimic the first church as closely as possible with our doctrine.
We begin this series with an overview of the Beatitudes. Jesus begins His sermon by sharply contrasting His idea of Christianity with the religion of the Pharisees. Next, Jesus needs His church to understand their purpose. He teaches them to be the salt and light of the world. He still wants His churches to make a difference. In the third lesson, Jesus teaches His church how to truly keep the Law. There is a stark difference in how the Pharisees were teaching people to keep the Law and how Jesus taught it to be. Next, Jesus gives us the Model Prayer. In this lesson, we will learn how to order our prayers. In the fifth lesson, Jesus tells His church to focus on things of Heaven and not on things of earth. Finally, Jesus teaches them how to establish a firm foundation. This foundation would allow them to withstand the trials of life.
As we learn the lessons that Jesus had for His first church, we learn the lessons that He had for His churches today.
